Homemade Laundry Soap

So since I am frugal (er cheap) ;) and I like to be "green" or at least live fairly naturally, I decided to jump on the homemade laundry soap bandwagon. And let me tell you, I am quite pleased! A few weeks ago, I made myself a big ol' batch of the stuff and it cleans well, smells great and is very inexpensive. I thought I would share the recipe today! :) Yay!
Homemade Laundry Soap
2 bars grated Fels Naptha soap (or other bar soap of your choice) I found my bars for 99 cents each
4 cups Borax (about $4 for a box of 12 cups)
4 cups washing soda (NOT baking soda) I found mine at Giant
Simply mix together and use 2 Tablespoons per load of laundry. I use it with a front loader and it works well. You can also add a half cup to one cup of apple cider vinegar (in the bleach compartment) with a load every now and then to cleanse the washer and for a deeper clean in your clothes. And they still smell fresh! No vinegary smell :)

  1. This is great-I've been wanting to try to make my own! I love putting vinegar in so I can avoid the dryer sheet.

  2. Just an FYI... if you didn't know. The Fels Naphtha soap puffs up in the microwave just like Ivory. It makes it crumble into a finer powder and much easier to grate.

  7. Doesn't Borax contain chemicals? This is not a chemical free detergent.
